I stopped doing it, I share a friends link to my content with my email list. I have no evidence that it damages read ratios those as many of the most popular articles seem to leverage this tactic. It may consider the user as one view, and if they read it on the friends link, it counts as a read and the other one is ignored. I have no supporting evidence though. I've had high read ratios with articles that use this method though.
