Habit stacking is one of the most powerful concepts I’ve ever learned. If you’ve read James Clear’s perennial bestseller, Atomic Habits, you’re already familiar with it. He writes extensively about the idea on his blog if you’re interested in more depth.

For brevity, here’s what you need to know: habit stacking is as powerful as it is simple — and it’s very simple. It means batching small, positive habits together, making it easier to complete all of them at once.

Since habits need triggers, stacking them means you just need one trigger for the whole batch. This makes accomplishing an entire set of habits almost as easy as completing a single one.

My Afternoon Habit Stack

Habit stacks make completely multiple habits nearly as easy as completing one.

I do this every Monday through Friday — on the days I’m in my office working:

  • Step away from my desk (around 11 AM)
  • Walk to the local grocery store.
